Game Reports (from Shiaz Virjee - Head Coach)

February 24 - Canada - Pakistan : 1 - 2

Canada-Pakistan Once again Canada played extremely well and generated 10 penalty corners to 2 for Pakistan. Canada also had 8 field shots and Pakistan had 5. The Pakistan goalie played quite well and our strikers did not have much luck.

Canada opened scoring midway in the first half when Sean Campbell deflected a pass from Ronnie Jagday to give Canada an early lead. Canada controlled the ball for long periods in the first half and generated a number of scoring opportunities. Just before the half ended, Pakistan got a penalty corner and scored a flick in the top corner. The half ended 1-1.

The second half was similar to the first and again Canada dictated play and put the pressure on Pakistan defence. Pakistan had one break and managed to beat Hari Kant in net but other than the goal it was all Canada in this half. At the end, Canada was playing in the Pakistan end, penetrating the circle, but could not score as time ran out.

With this loss Canada does not have any more games in this tournament.

The team is disappointed with the results and we obviously have to correct a few things. There are a number of positive things as well and several of the objectives for this tournament have been met.

February 22 - Korea - Canada : 2 - 1

It was very hot when the game started at 4:05 pm but by half time there was thunder and lightning and the game was delayed about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Canada started very poorly and the first 2 shots beat Mike Mahood in goal. Korea was up 0-2 after only 12 minutes!! The team went to work after that and slowly clawed its way back into the game. Some key substitutions and changes on the field enabled us to get back.

Canada played a good controlled game after the initial setback and created several attacking sequences that resulted in putting pressure on the Korean team defence. One such sequence earned us a penalty corner and Peter Milkovich scored from an option. The rest of the first half saw Canada attack and we were unluckly not to tie the game before the half.

After a break for over an hour , play resumed with both teams trying to get the next goal. Mike Mahood made a couple of key saves on penalty corners and field chances. And down at the other end , the Korean defence was picked apart by penetrating passes from the Canadian midfielders. The Korean goalie made some key saves to keep us from scoring.

Canada was down 2 men midway through the half but managed to survive the penalties with some excellent team defence. With time running out, Canada earned a penalty corner but the shot was high and the game ended soon after.

A disappointing loss for our team. We played well and again created good opportunities.

February 20 - Germany - Canada : 3-2

Canada lost to Germany 2-3 this evening at Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur.

Canada started well but, on the very first drive into the circle by Germany, the umpire awarded a stroke for a stick tackle. We felt that it was unwarranted but Germany went ahead 0-1. Canada went about building attack throught the midfield and and created a couple of good opportunities. Casey Ferguson created a turnover and Rob Short scored a field goal from it.

Both teams were playing well and there were several quick attacking sequences by both teams. There was no further scoring and half time score was 1-1.

The second half was even in the first 15 minutes and Germany went ahead when Oliver Domke scored a reverse stick shot that beat Hari Kant in goal. Canada also launched several attacks and scored when Bindi Kullar deflected the ball from a pass by Robin D'Abreo.

It was a close game and Canada appeared to be gaining more dominance but Germany counterattacked and scored a field goal against the run of play. The last 14 minutes were played primarily in the German 35 yards but Canada could not get the equalizer... One shot just sailed over the net and couple of others just went wide. The German defence held solid in the dying minutes and managed to keep us out.

100! Hari Kant
Alan Brahmst reached a milestone with 150 caps
and Hari Kant reached 100 caps.

Both have contributed significantly to the success of our team.

Alan Brahmst 150!

February 19 - India - Canada : 3-2

Canada lost 2-3 to India in a fast game played before a large crowd at Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

Canada opened scoring after 5 minutes when Rob Short scored a field goal from just inside the circle. The play was initiated by a couple of passes in midfield and Rob cleanly beat the goalie with a hard shot.

India replied a few minutes later when Dhanraj Pillay scored from a field goal. The shot was well placed and beat Mike Mahood. Canada continued to press and earned 2 penalty corners. The first one was saved by the goalkeeper; the second one was a variation that beat the goalie but the umpire called it back and ruled that there had been an obstruction. The replay did not show any... The Canadian team did not get flustered and continued to play attacking hockey and had several near misses. A couple of shots barely missed the net. Unfortunately, India got a breakaway and scored midway in the half against the run of play.

Hari Kant replaced Mike Mahood in net for the second half but India struck early and scored 5 minutes in the second half. Canada continued to press forward and earned 5 penalty corners in the second half. Canada scored from one of them through the pass in from Rick Roberts that Bindi Kullar deflected in the goal to make it 2-3. Although we had several other scoring opportunities , no more goals were scored.

In this game as in the 2 previous ones in this tournament, Canada outchanced the opposition. We had 7 penalty corners to 1 for India and we managed to score once. We had at least 7 field opportunities as well. I am confident we will improve on the scoring soon !!!.

February 17 - Canada - New Zealand : 1-1

Canada opened scoring in the first half when Andrew Griffiths intercepted a pass from New Zeland. He engaged the goalkeeper and then made a perfect pass to Rob Short who put it in.

New Zealand scored from a penalty corner just as the first half ended.

Once again, Canada dominated the game, earning 6 penalty corners and also creating 5 good quality field opportunities. We have not done a good job of converting these opportunities. Hari Kant in goal only faced one shot in the entire game.!! The team was more purposeful for the full 70 minutes and passed the ball well to beat the NZ pressure.

Tomorrow is a rest day and then we have 2 days of games against India and Germany. The sick players have now recovered!

February 16 - Malaysia - Canada : 3-1

Malaysia started very well in front of a large crowd and scored in the second minute from a ball deflected off a Canadian stick.

Canada pressed hard and earned a number of penalty corners but could not score. Canada had more of the play and controlled play for long periods but Malaysia earned its second goal from a counter-attack midway in the first half. Canada scored through Peter Milkovich from a well executed penalty corner.

Score at the half was 1-2 for Malaysia.

The second half saw Canada attacking and creating numerous opportunities but could not score. Malaysia scored the third goal with less than 1 minute left when Canada was in attack.

February 14 - Exhibition - Malaysia - Canada : 3-1

The Canadian Team arrived in Kuala Lumpur for the Sultan Azlan Shah Tournament on Saturday evening after travelling for 23 hours from Canada. The team practised twice on Sunday (February 13) and then again this morning.

We played an exhibition match with Malaysia this evening and lost the game 1-3. The game was played in pouring rain and while it affected the speed of the match and the technical skills, Malaysia took advantage of their opportunities while Canada missed several good ones, particularly in the second half.

Malaysia opened scoring midway in the first half from a penalty corner. Canada had some good quality chances as well but the Malaysian defence played well to keep us out. Mike Mahood was in goal in the first half and made some good saves.

Malaysia went ahead 2-0 in the second half from a field goal before Casey Ferguson scored one for Canada. Canada pressed forward and created several scoring opportunities but could not finish. Hari Kant was kept busy and Malaysia scored a third goal from a counter-attack late in the match.

Happy Valentine Day from KL !!!
