Shiaz Virjee talks to Off The Crossbar.com:
On October 27th in Alexandria, Egypt, Shiaz Virjee coached the FIH Men’s World XI in an exhibition match against Holland. Holland won 4-1, but not many coaches will ever have the opportunity to lead such a talented group of players onto the field. Virjee, the Canadian national team coach, gave his game plan to athletes like Juan Escarre from Spain, Australian goalie Damon Diletti and Greg Nicol from South Africa! OFF THE CROSSBAR caught up with Virjee at home in Vancouver. OTC: How did it feel to be the coach of such a talented team - to have
all this skill and ability at your fingertips?
OTC: How did you decide who would execute set plays? You must have had
many players who could flick on corners, take penalty strokes, free hits...
OTC: How did you communicate your messages to those who didn’t speak English?
OTC: Did you feel that the players began to play well together by the
end of the game?
OTC: What were your lasting impressions of the game?
|
Peter Milkovich talks to Off The Crossbar.com:
OTC: How does it feel to be selected to the World XI?
OTC: What is the most important factor in making you the player you are today?
OTC: Who are you excited about playing with on the World XI team?
OTC: Who gets your votes for player of the year?

July 4 - Canada A - Scotland : 5 - 1
Scotland opened the game like a rocket, taking their first shot 30 seconds into the game. After a short while, the Canadian team woke up and started to apply the pressure.
This paid off with goals in the 8th and the 14th minutes on penalty corners, the second using one of Scotland's penalty corner options.
Tempers flared on both teams in the middle of the game resulting in two yellow cards midway through he half. Canada maintained control and dominated the rest of the half.
The second half was evenly played with neither team getting many chances. More cards were handed out and Canada was able to hold off the pressing Scottish team. The Scots finally capitalized on a short corner late in the game but were not able to use this goal to make a substantial comeback.
July 4 - Canada B - USA : 4 - 0
The Canadian team started out flat but rebounded, scoring two goals back to back in the middle of the first half.
The US team looked sharp, and continued to press and had several chances to get back into the game but were not able to convert. The Canadian team continued to press and scored a third goal near the end of the first half.
The US team played hard and was the more dominant team in the second half, but the speed of the Canadian juniors was too much for their opponents. They were able to convert on their chances and due to a good defensive effort and great goaltending late in the second half were able to preserve the shut out in a well deserved win.
July 3 - Canada A - USA : 7 - 0
The game did not start as lopsidedly as the score may indicate. For the first twenty minutes the play was even and it looked as though the US team may manage the second upset of the day.
The Canadian team was able to convert on its opportunities unlike their opponents, took the lead and held on.
The team did not let up to allow the US team back into the game, dominating the latter stages of the first half and the entire second.
July 3 - Canada B - Scotland : 1 - 1
A very different game than the opening match between these two teams. Canada managed to score early on a goal by Ranjeev Deol on a great set up by Casey Ferguson.
The Scottish team kept pressing and hit the crossbar in an attempt to even the game at the end of the first half.
The game was evened up on a short corner from Phil Webster in the 50th minute. The Scottish team continued to press towards the end and frustration set in towards the end of the game. Four yellow card were handed out during the last 15 minutes (Canada two, Scotland two).
July 2 - Canada A - Scotland : 0 - 1
The Game between Canada and Scotland was a very hard fought and physical game, testing the umpires as well as the players. This game was very evenly played with neither team dominating.
The score is no indication of the number of scoring chances. There were a large number of good scoring opportunities for both teams, both on penalty corners and from field goals. Only stellar goal keeping from Harry Kant (Canada) and Paul Mellar (Scotland) at both ends kept the score so low.
With the great play by the teams and the goal tenders the game seemed destined to end in a scoreless tie, until Calum Wood (Scotland) managed to score the game winning goal in the 53rd minute.
Scotland really tested the Canadian team and took the game from them, beating them with better basic skills and strategy. The Canadian Team showed more creativity and flashy play, but was not able to score on their chances.
July 2 - Canada B - USA : 1 - 0
The game was evenly matched, with the US team dominating the early portion of the first half. Neither team was able to gain much advantage in the first half, although the Canadian Team was able to use their speed in attack to break through the fairly solid US defense.
The deadlock was broken early in the second half with Wayne Fernandez (Canada) scoring of a penalty corner with a low flick that deflected off the US goal keeper. The US team rallied after the goal but were not able to score with the Canadian team continuing to apply pressure.
July 1 - Canada A - USA : 4 - 0
Comments from Shiaz Virjee, Canadian NationalCoach:
The game was a fairly well paced Game. The team kept the game fast and managed to dominate large portions of the game.
We played well and dominated, but we ran out of creativity as the game wore. There were several mental lapses in the second half that prevented us from controlling the entire game.
These are things we will have to work on heading into tomorrow’s game against Scotland as well as the Pan Am Games. Scotland defeated the Canada B Team 5-2 and we can look forward to playing a team with very good skills, good speed and a large number of set plays.
July 1 - Canada B - Scotland : 2 - 5
The game was very well played, with Scotland taking control of the game early scoring two goals in the first twelve minutes of the game. The Canada B team persevered and were able to cut the lead to one at the end of the first half.
Canada B stormed out in the second half to tie the game at 2. At this point, the game was anyone's to win, with no team able to gain the upper hand. The deadlock was broken when P. Webster scored his second penalty corner goal of the game in the 49th minute.
The younger Canada B team was not able to rebound from this goal. Scotland were able to finish the game in a convincing fashion scoring two more field goals within 8 minutes of each other to clinch the victory.

February 8 - Canada - Malaysia : 2-0
Game Report from Shiaz Virjee - Head Coach:
Canada defeated Malaysia 2 - 0 to finish 3rd in the Akhbar El Yom Tournament.
Canada completely dominated the game and if we had finished with better shots the score would have been higher. Canada opened the scoring in the first half on a penalty corner flick by Peter Milkovich. Andrew Griffiths scored a field goal in the second half. Mike Mahood was in goal for Canada and made a couple of saves otherwise he did not have much action.
The official dinner is tonight and tomorrow the team will prepare to return home.
I am quite satisfied with today's win and David Yule did a good job at right half as Ronnie Jagday had been suspend for this game.
The team is in good spirits with this win!
February 6 - Malaysia - Canada : 3-2
Game Report from Shiaz Virjee - Head Coach:
We did not have any reserves due to sickness and injuries and at one stage Peter Milkovich played at right half and Andrew Griffiths or Scott Mosher at left half!
Our defence did not play well and gave up a couple of goals. Malaysia scored on 2 penalty corners and a field goal while Scott Smith scored on a field goal and Andrew Griffiths scored a penalty corner. Malaysia opened scoring on a penalty corner and we tied it up and then Malaysia went ahead again and we drew level at 2 - 2. However, Malaysia scored one more before the end of the game.
We have 2 rest days and then we will probably play for 3 and 4th place on Tuesday. Hopefully we will have a few more players to play in the game! Also, in todays game, Ronnie Jagday got 2 yellow cards and he will probably be suspended for the next game...
100 caps for the Canadian National team. Congratulations Rob! |
February 5 - Canada - Kenya : 4-0
Game Report from Shiaz Virjee - Head Coach:
Canada defeated Kenya 4 - 0 this evening (in an ealier match today India defeated Egypt 2 - 1).
Scott Mosher scored a field goal in the first half which was well played but we did not generate many chances.
Peter Milkovich scored from a penalty corner in the second half and Rob Short and Scott Smith both scored on field goals.
The Team played well and attacked in a cohesive manner. We are in a tight race to make the finals. We have to beat Malaysia tomorrow and hope that India loses to Malaysia...
Wayne Fernandes is in hospital after surgery for appendicitis.
February 3 - Canada - India : 2-1
Game Report from Shiaz Virjee - Head Coach:
Canada played a controlled game and scored in the first minute of the game from a penalty corner by Peter Milkovich. The yound Canadian defence of Tom Green, Wayne Fernandes, Bindi Kullar, Ronnie Jagday with Mike Mahood in goal did a good job. The midfielders with Peter Milkovich, Andrew Griffiths and Rob Short played very well to keep the strong Indian attack in check.
India tied the game late in the first half on a field goal that was misplayed in the defence. Canada went ahead mid-way in the second half by a field goal from Tom Green who was set-up by Peter Milkovich and Rob Short.
February 2 - Egypt - Canada : 3-0
Game Report from Shiaz Virjee - Head Coach:
Canada lost to Egypt 0 - 3 today... Egypt outplayed Canada in the first half and were up 1 - 0 at the half on a field goal. Hari Kant made several good saves. Canadian team forwards had difficulty penetrating the Egyptian defence and were frustrated with the long hits by Egypt.
Second half Canada gained the upper hand and created several good opportunities as well as earned a number of penalty corners. The score could easily have been in Canada's favour if we had capitalized on the opportunities.
Egypt scored against the run of play on a turnover in midfield and later
scored again as Canada was pushing up. Overall the second half was much
better and with so many new or young players it will take a few games for
everyone to settle into their new roles and positions.
Mike Mahood,
Ranjeev Deol and
Paul Wettlaufer have been sick
and a couple of other players are also complaining of sickness.

Canada won the Glasgow World Classic indoor hockey tournament yesterday at the Kelvin Hall, having surprised Denmark, the pre-event favourites, by coming from 5-1 down to achieve a fine draw in their match on Saturday afternoon. After that the Canadians never looked back, their youthful team delighting the crowd with their skills and exuberant performances. Canadian captain Robin D'Abreo, a veteran of the last Classic tournament, said: "We really didn't know what to expect and we had hardly any indoor preparation before we left. But we meshed together very well and put on a good show." |
